Dr Tim Dunne is a Consultant Clinical & Organizational Psychologist

He has worked in the UK, USA, Australia, Switzerland & Ireland as a psychologist. Tim studied psychology in University College, Dublin and later at the University of London (Birkbeck College) where he gained a post-graduate Master’s degree. He obtained his Doctorate degree from the University of Middlesex, London. He has over 30 years’ experience in the health & business sectors in Ireland & the UK.

Tim trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) in 2003 and he has had a private practice in EMDR in Ireland, UK & Switzerland since then.

As a result of working with many therapists/psychologists over the years in supervision and in therapy, it became clear to me that the standard 50-minute therapy session once or twice per week was often inadequate for dealing with unresolved developmental or attachment related trauma. Hence, this intensive 6 hour all day approach grew to address early developmental traumas and attachment issues which may often be pre-linguistic. One might ask, if these early experiences of the trauma are pre-linguistic, then how can they be addressed? The answer lies in the way our early memories are encoded in our implicit/procedural or body memory systems at a sub-cortical level in the limbic system or brain stem. These early experiences are often seen in physiological survival reactions, introjections, implicit conclusions about life or self, or patterns of “negative templates” and behaviours, Life Scripts etc which trap us into repeating the past, precisely because they are so familiar to us. These early traumas are often embodied, and may manifest themselves as internal working models, incomprehensible affects, seemingly inexplicable tensions & conflicts with others and perhaps medically unexplained phenomena such as migraines, CFS, IBS, Fibromyalgia etc. Thus, the Intensive Therapy approach is attachment informed, early developmental trauma oriented and designed with professional therapists in mind to “deep clean” any residual unprocessed traumas.

The Intensive Therapy approach is aimed at professional therapists such as psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses etc who feel that their own therapy during their professional training, and continued professional development, may not have addressed/processed some key early childhood experiences which continue to influence their behaviour and emotional life today.

The Intensive Therapy approach involves in-depth personal work focusing usually, but not exclusively, on early childhood experiences, some of which may not be recalled but which have left their imprint on your psychological & emotional reality today. We can access these early experiences using a variety of techniques including guided imagery, EMDR, family myths or stories, body sensations or muscle memory, art, role-play etc.

I conduct a free, clinical assessment interview before the Intensive Session with each person which lasts about 1 hour. This involves taking a detailed personal, family & social history. In particular, I shall ask questions about any Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) which you may have had, using a questionnaire. Following this interview, if I believe it to be necessary, I will offer you up to 4-5 sessions (cost = €100 per session) before the Intensive Therapy Session to build your coping resources and your resilience to manage strong emotions/affects before we address any traumatic experiences which have motivated you sign up for this Intensive Therapy approach.

Looking back, my full-day therapy session with Tim really was a turning point. Tim’s gentle but intensive approach over six hours explored the issues at the core of my mental health challenges, exposed them in a safe and controlled way, and addressed them through treatment processes that helped to disconnect them from my past. The outcome was a much stronger sense of clarity, control and confidence that has endured since, in the face of the kinds of life events that would ordinarily have sent me down a path of anxiety and depression. I often say that I was “wired up” wrong, as a result of childhood trauma. This full day session helped me to “re-wire” my thinking and I feel much more stable, secure and self-aware as a result. I’d highly recommend this approach. ~ Elizabeth, 37
